Why learning how to use a slide rule?

Learning to use a slide rule builds strong number sense that calculators often hide. It improves estimation, helps you recognize impossible answers, and makes multiplication feel visual and intuitive rather than abstract. Because it shows only a few meaningful digits, you learn to respect real precision. Its hands-on, slower use keeps you mentally engaged, clarifies ideas like powers and logarithms, and provides a battery-free tool powered entirely by math.

Fun fact: Slide rules helped put men on the Moon. Watch the video tutorial below to discover how.

Tutorial

The video tutorial below explains how to perform the following operations with a slide rule:

  • Multiplications and divisions
  • Finding the reciprocal of a number
  • Handling proportions and conversions
  • Additions and subtractions
  • Squaring and taking the square root of a number
  • Cubing and taking the cube root of a number
  • Raising a number to any power and arbitrary root extraction
  • Computing the base-10 logarithm and base-10 exponential of a number
  • Computing the logarithm and exponential in any base of a number
  • Computing trigonometric functions and their inverses

If you don't have a slide rule handy, you might want to download these scales and follow along with the tutorial below.
